Ride the Waves in Paradise: Surfing Lessons/Coaching in Waikiki & Oahu

Meet Ivan

We started Hook-Up Surfing because we believe surfing has something valuable to offer almost everyone.

Over the past 30 years, we've taught people from every imaginable background. Complete beginners and lifelong athletes. Children and retirees. Families, travelers, military personnel, professionals, students, and people checking a lifelong dream off their bucket list.

Some arrive confident and ready for a challenge. Others arrive nervous and unsure of what to expect.

What they all have in common is a desire to experience something that has brought so much meaning to our own lives.

When Hook-Up Surfing was founded, we saw an opportunity to make surfing more accessible. We believed that with the right coaching, progression, encouragement, and environment, far more people could truly learn than most people thought possible at the time.

That belief still guides everything we do.

Through thousands of lessons and decades in the water, we've continually refined how we teach. Our goal is simple: help students build skills, confidence, ocean awareness, and independence while creating an experience that's both rewarding and fun.

But surfing has never been just about learning to ride waves.

One of the greatest privileges of this work has been watching what happens after the lesson ends.

We've watched children grow into remarkable adults. We've seen families build traditions around surfing. We've watched complete strangers become lifelong friends. We've seen students continue surfing decades after their first lesson and carry what they learned in the ocean into the rest of their lives.

For some people, surfing becomes a lifelong passion.

For others, it's confidence, friendship, adventure, resilience, a deeper connection to the ocean, or simply the memory of a vacation they'll never forget.

Every story is different.

That's one of the things we love most about surfing. The waves may be the common thread, but what people gain from surfing is deeply personal.

The goal was never simply to teach people how to ride waves.

The goal was to help more people discover what surfing might add to a life.

After all these years, that's still what inspires us most.
