  • Excellent Surfing Experience - Lifetime memories

My 15-year-old daughter and I had a great surf lesson with Ivan. He is a great teacher and coach. We surfed numerous waves and will always remember our enjoyable experience. Surfing on Waikiki beach, with Diamond Head mountain in the background, was excellent.—John V. (TripAdvisor)

  • Great surf experience for our family

Our family of 5 (2 parents 3 teens) went out with Ivan and Andy. They really helped us surf, rather than tow us to the waves and push us on like some other "lessons" we took during our trip. The waves were small but very long rides. The kids had great interactions with Andy and actually asked me to leave this review because they liked the experience so much. Thanks guys!! —Julie L. (TripAdvisor)

  • You too can surf! (also known as "Breathe my brother, breathe.")

We spent a wonderful two hours with Ivan learning to surf. A quick but informative land session was followed by plenty of time in the water. He had us (athletic 60 year olds) up on waves many times and our smiles lasted long after we finished the lesson. He was knowledgeable, patient, and always safe. We would absolutely return to learn again! "Just breathe and be calm." —Inspiration 826105 (TripAdvisor)

  • Great time! Great conversation! Excellent instruction!!!

Jenn was an amazing instructor! It was my first time trying my hand at surfing. She was able to help me translate 8 years of skateboarding to riding waves in short order. I was up and riding after only one wave! It was amazing.

We had great conversations in between waves. She was hands down one of the best instructors I’ve been aquatinted with. I will be taking another lesson next time I’m on the islands. — Andrew H. (TripAdvisor)

  • Best Time Ever! (literally made my trip!)

If I could give more than 5 stars, I definitely would. I had an amazing time and learning to surf here basically made my week-long trip to Waikiki. I came for a week (spring break) with my dad but he didn't want to join the lesson. Even so, Ivan and Jen made me feel safe the entire time I was out.

I took 4 days of 2-hour private lessons during my trip and learned so much during that time. I was able to stand within the first lesson and (sometimes) catch my own wave by the end of the trip. Ivan also managed to teach me how to turn. Over the course of the 4 days, I was able to get from an 11ft board to a 9ft board!

Everything about my experience was amazing, from the people I met surfing and past students that came out to gaining a new skill and hobby. The lessons were holistic, comprehensive, and comprehendible - I wouldn't change a thing. Even wiping out became fun! Plus, surfing in the rain was a nice bonus for the last day.

Side note: Ivan also has an amazing photographer that was able to capture videos and pictures of me surfing - definitely recommend. It is the best way to see how you are doing and its great for a laugh if they catch you belly-flopping XP

CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW AMAZING OF A TIME I HAD. This is a definite must if you travel to Waikiki. — Sabrina W. (TripAdvisor)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Surf lessons are designed to help new surfers learn the fundamentals and catch waves safely.

Surf coaching is designed for surfers who already have some experience and want to progress faster.

Coaching focuses on personalized feedback, technique, wave selection, positioning, ocean awareness, and the specific skills needed to reach your next surfing goal.

If you want to pick up surfing as a beginner and combine lessons and coaching, we highly recommend our 10 lesson series.

  • Every lesson is tailored to the individual student, but most first-time surfers begin with 15–30 minutes of instruction on the beach. During this time, we'll cover safety, ocean awareness, surf etiquette, paddling, and the techniques that help students catch and ride waves successfully.

After that, we head into the water for approximately 90 minutes of surfing.

For students with previous experience, we often spend a few minutes discussing goals, reviewing technique, and identifying areas for improvement before getting in the water.

Our goal is not simply to help you stand up on a surfboard. We want you to understand the fundamentals of surfing, build confidence, and leave with skills you can continue developing long after your lesson is over.

  • We provide a surfboard selected specifically for your height, weight, experience level, and goals, along with a rashguard for your lesson.

Choosing the right equipment is an important part of the learning process. We use boards that maximize safety, confidence, and progression based on each student's individual needs.

We recommend bringing water, sunscreen, and a towel. If you have your own equipment and would like advice about board selection or progression, we're always happy to help.

  • No experience is necessary.

Many of our students are first-time surfers who have never touched a surfboard before. We provide the equipment, instruction, and support needed to help you learn safely and build confidence in the water.

Our lessons are tailored to your experience level, goals, and comfort level, whether you're trying surfing for the first time or returning after a long break.

  • While every student is different, nearly all first-time students who want to stand up, successfully stand up and ride waves during their lesson.

If you choose to continue surfing, our goal isn't simply to help you stand up once. We want you to understand the fundamentals of surfing so you can continue building skills and confidence long after your lesson is over.

With the right instruction, most people are capable of learning far more than they initially expect.

  • You can build a foundation.

Many of our students learn to surf while visiting Hawaii. How much you progress depends on a few factors. We have a couple of students who have progressed to shortboarding and self sufficiency in a week and others who take longer, but regardless you will improve.

Whether you take a single lesson or several sessions, our goal is to help you build real surfing skills, confidence, and a foundation you can continue developing long after your vacation ends.

  • Every child is different, so we tailor our approach to the individual student.

Our lessons focus on building water awareness, safety skills, confidence, and independence from the very beginning. Whenever appropriate, we encourage children to paddle and surf on their own boards because those experiences often lead to faster learning and greater confidence in the water.

In some situations, we may recommend tandem surfing as part of the learning process. We make that decision based on the child's age, experience level, comfort in the water, ocean conditions, and overall safety.

Our goal is to create a fun, positive experience while helping young surfers develop skills that can stay with them for years to come.

  • It's completely normal. Many of our students arrive feeling nervous, uncertain, or even convinced they won't be able to surf. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching those same students gain confidence, surprise themselves, and discover they are capable of far more than they expected.

  • Probably not.

Over the years, we've taught students ranging from young children (age 3) to retirees (age 80). Surfing can be adapted to a wide variety of ages, fitness levels, and physical situations.

Our goal is to create a safe, enjoyable experience that matches your individual needs and helps you progress at your own pace whether that is fast or slow.

  • Not being tied to a single surf spot allows us to choose locations based on conditions, student ability, and overall safety.

Less crowded waves often provide more opportunities to practice, receive personalized feedback, and build confidence without competing for waves with large groups of surfers.

Our goal is always to provide the best possible learning environment so students can focus on learning, having fun, and getting the most out of their surf lesson.

  • You do not need to be an athlete to learn to surf.

Over the years, we've taught people of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels. Many of our most successful students had little or no previous experience with board sports and/or didn’t consider themselves to be athletic.

Our lessons are designed to meet you where you are and help you build skills and confidence at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

  • Reservations are processed through our secure online booking system, which provides real-time availability, instant confirmations, and online reservation management. The booking fee is charged by the booking platform, not by Hook Up Surfing.
