Welcome to the Hook Up Surfing Journal

Aloha and welcome.

Surfing has been a huge part of our lives for a long time, and one of the best parts of teaching surf lessons is sharing that experience with other people.

Every day we get questions about surfing in Waikiki, choosing the right board, reading waves, ocean safety, improving technique, and the many surf breaks that make Oahu's South Shore such a special place to surf.

Sometimes those conversations happen in the parking lot after a lesson, or while watching the waves before paddling out. Sometimes they're questions we've answered hundreds of times, but still enjoy talking about because no two surfers follow exactly the same path.

We started this journal as a place to share some of that knowledge and experience.

Here you'll find articles about Waikiki surf breaks, beginner surfing, surf coaching, equipment, ocean safety, and the process of becoming a better surfer. Some posts will be practical. Some will be educational. Some will simply highlight things we find interesting about the waves and ocean conditions we encounter every day.

One of the things we love most about surfing is that there is always something new to learn. Whether it's your first day on a surfboard or you've been surfing for decades, the ocean always has a way of teaching something new.

We feel incredibly fortunate to call Hawaii home and to spend so much time in the water. Through this journal, we hope to share a little of what we've learned along the way.
